I have heard great things about The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller from primary teachers–they LOVE it! I would really like to read it, but I am so tight on time that I want to make sure it is applicable for middle and high school teachers/classrooms before I read it. Have any of you read this book? Any thoughts on the practicality for the middle/high school classroom? I would love your help on this…thanks!

I hope you don’t mind, but I saw your question on Twitter. I teach 6th grade, so the book is about my middle school students. I would say it’s more relevant for you than your primary colleagues, although I’m thrilled they like it.

I love The Book Whisperer! I read it a few years ago when I was teaching 5th grade and was so inspired by it! It’s definitely more of a middle school or high school book, but the book was so inspirational that I was finally motivated to try the reading workshop approach in my own classroom! What an amazing difference, right from the start! When kids are reading their own books and conferring with the teacher, it makes all the difference! I was also really pleased with their test scores at the end of the year. I think this book should be required reading for any upper elementary or middle school teacher who teaches reading. If you aren’t familiar with the reading workshop approach, it will give you a new framework for thinking about teaching reading. Love it! Thanks Donalyn!
